A Worn Bible: The Power of Scripture Amidst Struggles

This worn, well-used Bible, is a testament to the resilience of the people of Mozambique.

This summer, Jason and I had the opportunity to visit a small rural church in Mozambique that left a profound impact on us. As we entered the humble mud-walled building, we were struck by the sight of a single, worn-out Bible resting on the podium. Its frayed pages told the story of countless hands that had sought comfort and guidance within its words.

While we are aware of the pressing need for Bibles in this region, witnessing this particular church—located a couple of hours west of where we usually minister—was a stark reminder of how extensive that need truly is. Many pastors and congregants here do not own a Bible of their own. For them, the Word of God is not just a book; it is a lifeline, especially in times of uncertainty, like they are now experiencing.

Over the past few weeks, Mozambique has faced violent civil unrest following contested election results. The same party that has held power since the end of their civil war in 1992 continues to dominate, despite the voices of the people calling for change. Tragically, at least 30 people have lost their lives, and protests have disrupted daily life and the country’s supply chain. In this context, the need for hope and stability is more critical than ever, as many fear the possibility of a second civil war. The faithful believers we met long for their own copies of Scripture to read, study, and share, providing them with strength and encouragement during these challenging times.

As we reflect on our experiences, we invite you to consider how blessed we are to have easy access to multiple Bibles, often taken for granted. In contrast, many in Mozambique face daily struggles, not only for their basic needs but also for the spiritual nourishment that comes from the Word of God.

One of the ways we assist our partner churches is by providing Bibles in local languages to pastors, church leaders, and congregants who do not have one. We encourage you to watch this video, where congregants from one of our partner churches in Mozambique share personal testimonies of how their lives have changed since receiving a Bible. There are so many more Christians in Mozambique who long for a Bible of their very own!

Let us join together in prayer for our brothers and sisters in Mozambique, that they may find peace and hope amidst the turmoil. Your support and prayers are vital in helping us bridge the gap between those who have access to Scripture and those who yearn for it.

Thank you for being a part of our mission at Hope of a Nation. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of many.
