On the morning of May 7, 2025, Derick—founder and director of Siloam Mountain Junior School & Orphanage in Uganda—was involved in a serious small motorcycle accident on his way to his employment outside of the orpahange. A vehicle struck him while in transit leaving him unconscious for several day and resulting in serious injuries that would require months of recovery and multiple surgeries.
Derick sustained tiny brain tissue injuries with swelling in the left frontal region of his head. X-rays revealed a fracture of both the tibia and fibula in his left leg, along with a dislocated ankle joint. He was immediately hospitalized, where doctors sutured and dressed his wounds and placed his leg in a cast in hopes that the injuries would heal without surgery.
He remained in the hospital for over three weeks, and on May 30, he was discharged home.
But something wasn't right.
Between May 30 and June 13, Derick began experiencing extreme, debilitating headaches and even episodes of blacking out. An MRI revealed that the brain swelling had not resolved—and worse, a cerebral hematoma had formed. On June 20, he underwent emergency surgery to relieve the pressure and drain the bleeding near his brain.
Shortly after, a follow-up x-ray showed that although his leg bones had healed, the ankle had not. On June 26, Derick underwent a second surgery—an Open Reduction Internal Fixation—to realign the ankle joint and secure it with metal fasteners.
We are so grateful to report that Derick has come through both procedures well. His headaches have subsided, his strength is slowly returning, and he recently shared, "Every day there is a great change." Through it all, Derick has remained faithful and hopeful.
Derick is more than a survivor. He is the founder and director of Siloam Mountain Junior School & Orphanage, a home and school for over 600 children in Uganda. Through his leadership, children who once had no one have found family, education, and the hope of Christ. He is a father not only to his own son, but to hundreds of the most vulnerable.
Thanks to the tireless efforts of Anthony and Valerie Rabak, the expenses for Derick’s initial hospitalization have been fully covered. But the cost of these two unexpected surgeries, recovery care, medications, transportation, and therapy is significant—and growing. Additional treatment may still be needed depending on how his healing progresses.
Derick’s absence during this time has also revealed just how deeply the children depend on him—not only for leadership, but for daily provision. The orphanage, home to over 600 children, has long operated under tight financial constraints. In addition to overseeing their care, Derick has worked an outside job simply to help cover food, education, and medical needs for the children. With him unable to work, that supplemental income has disappeared.
While this fundraiser is focused on helping Derick recover, we cannot ignore the impact his accident has had on the children who love and rely on him. His daily presence isn’t just important—it’s vital to their survival and sense of security.
Your donation today will go directly toward Derick's recovery—ensuring that all necessary care is covered so he can focus on healing and, in time, return to the children who miss him so deeply.
This is an opportunity to make a very real difference in the life of a man who has poured himself out for so many others. Your support is not just a gift toward medical care—it's a way of saying, "We see you, Derick. You're not alone."
Thank you for being part of Derick's healing story.
