Secondary School Students in Mozambique: When Access Becomes the Barrier

For many of the children and students we serve in Mozambique, the greatest challenge to education is not desire or ability. It's access.

As we've shared in previous updates, vulnerable children often face multiple barriers to staying in school. These include school fees, lack of basic supplies, and the pressures of daily survival that compete directly with education. Even small gaps can determine whether a child continues their studies or quietly falls behind.

Recently, an additional challenge has emerged for our secondary school students in grades 10 through 12.

Schools in their region have begun requiring that a growing number of assignments be completed and submitted in electronic format.

While this may be standard in many parts of the world, it creates a very real barrier in the communities where our students live. Most families don't have access to computers or printers, can't afford smart phones, and have no reliable electricity. What is intended as a learning tool, can quickly become a point of exclusion.

To ensure our students are not left behind, we are now stepping in to provide printed assignments so they can continue their education without interruption.

This allows them to remain engaged in their studies, complete their work, and keep pace with their classmates, even when the infrastructure around them is not yet sufficient.

While this adjustment is practical, it also brings an ongoing increase in cost for the ministry. It is another example of how educational support in this context is not static. It must continually adapt as new barriers emerge.

When we step back and look at the broader picture, it becomes clear that education here is not simply about providing opportunity once. It is about continually bridging gaps so that students are not quietly excluded as systems change around them.

Thank you for helping make that possible.
