This year’s Children’s Day celebration in Dondo, Mozambique was our biggest ever, with nearly 300 children gathering throughout the event (on June 1st) for a day of joy, worship, food, and community.
Before the meal, the children joined together in vibrant singing and dancing, worshiping God with songs in their native Sena language—music that holds deep cultural meaning and is beloved by the kids. There were games and group activities, including a crowd favorite where the children formed a “train,” joyfully weaving around the yard and passing under a “bridge” made by others holding hands. Balloons added a festive touch as laughter filled the air.
Afterward, the children were treated to a special meal of chicken, rice, potatoes, salad, and juice, a feast that’s a rare treat in their daily lives. As the day went on, the number of children continued to grow, especially at mealtime. There were so many kids by then that we didn’t have enough plates for everyone! Many of the kids ate in shifts, and others were kindly asked to bring a plate from home, a small challenge that pointed to a greater need.
This day was a beautiful reminder of God’s love for every child, and of the unique opportunity we have to reach and nurture the next generation in this region. Moments like these also highlight how helpful it would be to one day have a dedicated space; a place better equipped for cooking, gathering, and caring for the growing number of children we serve in Dondo.
